The incandescent light bulb

the light bulb was invented in 1879 by Thomas edison. it took him 1000 time to make the lightbulb. He said he didn't fail 1000 times, he found 999 ways not to make a lightbulb.

  1. I did not know it took him that many times to make the lightbulb. Great quote!!

  2. This is a fine example of the saying "Persistance pays dividends" Edison was great at having the foresight to know when to stick with an idea. I can only think of one time that he did not make the right choice and that was with chosing whether to supply the public with AC or DC electricity. He tried to corner the market with DC when he should have been collaberating with Westinghouse in forming an AC grid. He would have made just as much money and it would not have taken as long to supply the public.

  3. That is a great quote from the great mind of Thomas Edison. The fact that he saw his first 999 attempts as success, and not failure is what lead him to be able to create the lightbulb. Without thinking like that, society as we know it would be a very different place. His quote can be applied to so many aspects of life, and inspire you to never give up.

  4. Wow, 100 tries. This is a person who sees the glass half full and not half empty. Persistence pays off. People give up after one try of doing something, he choose to keep going until he acheived his goal. Where would we be with technology if everyone gave up after only a few tries.

  5. The light bulb has changed us for the better, Edison is one of the greatest inventors of all time. The lightbulb helped to light up houses and streets to make everyone safer. Knowing that Edison made 1000 attempts and got it makes me feel confident with the things in my life. That we should never give up no matter what is in our way.

  6. You could write an encyclopedia on what the invention of the light bulb has meant to society. Work and play could be extended into the evening, social interaction increased, plays (imagine plays before the light bulb)became easier to produce and enjoyed. Millions of jobs were created dorectly and indirectly.

  7. Imagine all the things we can't do while there is no light in our homes. It's funny to think when the power goes out it is such an inconvenience. Edison was a genius in my opinion. Guess you can't say his invention didn't shed light on technology to come...

  8. A 1,000 attempts who would of thought. I can't think of to many people that would have kept trying after all of those attempts The light bulb has change our lives dramatically. This invention has giving us light at a flick of a switch, think of all of those candles you would be burning stying up late writing papers.

  9. Hysterical, way to put a positive view on this. I can’t believe it took so long to perfect something we can consider so simple. But what would we ever do without that little light bulb! This is something I could not imagine life without, we would be sitting with candles trying to eat and write.

  10. I love the quote. The attitude of Americans then shows the decline in self reliance among citizens. He refused to look at his mistakes or early experiments as failures. This is an attitude would do our nation well in the next few years.

  11. Yeah the quote really is a great read. Edison was such a great man and so influential on everyone in the civilized world. To keep persisting in his experiments really shows how much character he had to go along with his brilliance.

  12. it seems that the one company who tends to be in lead and at head of producing or creating some of the newest in electronics and technologies, General Electric, was founded by Thomas Edison himself! THats the most interesting piece of data i got from this article. "In 1892, a merger of Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company created General Electric Company." Also GE is the only company today who was also in the original index in 1896.

  13. Thats crazy it took him 1000 times to make the lightbulb. I know if it was me after the 10th try I would have given up. If he didn't persevere and make it life would be very dark. That is a great quote. He had a great attitude about it. I agree with James in how our nation could use that attitude today.

  14. I love the lightbulb! I don't know what I would do without it. I love Edison...now if he could of only invented a free way to get light in your house! I could not imaging life without the lightbulb. What did kids do back in the days where there was no lighbulbs....were they afraid of the dark?

  15. Did you know an incandecent light bulb is only 2% opticaly efficient? That is that only 2% of the energy that it uses goes to makeing light.

  16. i think the quote is just as important as the invention itself. That alone shows that anything is possible no matter how much effort or time it may require. Also the idea may seem simply and easy to accomplish, but imagine trying to invent something that doesn't xist in any form.. brilliant

  17. Light bulbs have definitely evolved from then to now. Back then they just had evolved from using other sorts of light such as candles. I liked the article. Gave me some better insight on the evolution of light bulbs. Now and days light bulbs can be used for months!

  18. If it weren't for those 999 screw ups, we wouldn't be where we are today. Thank you Mr. Edison. The light bulb has really evolved since then, from energy saving to brighter and longer lasting. The world would be a dark place without it.

  19. Its really incredible how something can go from a simple idea to actually working and being an everyday household product
